Florida Phlebotomy Frequently Asked Questions

A hybrid course has both in-person and virtual components. Our course consists of 166 total hours of training. This includes 90 hours of self-paced, online, basic healthcare training, which can be completed before, during, or after the in-person class. It also includes 76 hours of didactic, in-person phlebotomy training. Both components of this course must be completed before a certificate of completion will be issued.

Phlebotomy literally means “to cut a vein” in Greek. It is the process of making an incision (we call it a puncture) in a vein for the purpose of collecting blood. A person who performs phlebotomy is termed a “Phlebotomist”.

Students must be at least 18 years old and have a High School Diploma (or the equivalent of a diploma) in order to register. PTS requires a copy of your Diploma or equivalent on file.

If you obtained your graduation certificate in another country, we welcome foreign documents. However, for us to consider them, they need to be translated and evaluated. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine their equivalence to a United States high school diploma or transcript. We recommend using reputable evaluation agencies such as http://www.naces.org/members.html, http://aice-eval.org/members/, Parchment.gov, Scholaro.com, and Wes.org.

We know it can be scary, but we require all students (outside of medical exemptions) to participate in order to understand what others experience when you will draw their blood. Instead of declining to participate at all, you may just limit the number of times you have your own blood drawn. We adhere to the practice of “I stick you, you stick me” in the classroom, in order to provide our students with exceptional hands-on training.

Attendance is mandatory for all students, regardless of their current level of knowledge. Students must attend all 76 hours of in-person classes. If a student misses a class after commencement, they can arrange to make it up during a different day, evening, or weekend class.

The VeinViewer™ utilizes Active Vascular Imaging Navigation (AVIN) technology to see through a patient’s skin, and provide you with a real time digital map of their vessels. Phlebotomy Training Specialists is the only school in the United States to make the financial commitment to students to be able to utilize this cutting-edge technology equipment in the classroom setting.

Students can enroll on specific city pages by selecting the course schedule they would like to attend.

There is no deadline for registration. As long as the course is displayed on our website – that means that it is open for you to register for it. Once the class fills up or starts, the course will automatically close and will show as “FULL” on our website.

The 90-hour portion of this course is the online Basic Healthcare Worker portion. Students have 180 days from the date they sign their Enrollment Agreement to complete the online portion. The online course is self-paced and can be completed before, during, or after the in-person class. We suggest using a laptop or desktop computer.

The 76-hour in-person portion of this course teaches the basics of Phlebotomy. Students will follow the class schedule they select. We offer a 90-day completion period to give students time to make up an in-person class should they accrue an absence.

This course is a pass/fail program. No letter grade will be issued or reflected on a student’s course completion certificate.

Scrubs for the class are not required, but highly recommended. Students who choose not to wear scrubs should come dressed in conservative clothing with closed-toed shoes. Short sleeves are preferred to allow access to arms for blood drawing.

At Phlebotomy Training Specialists, we understand that each person has a unique set of circumstances, and we offer a payment plan to accommodate all potential students. Because we are a private institution, we DO NOT accept financial aid. However, we DO accept vouchers from third-party payers who are willing to pay for private education.
Our payment plan works by requiring ONLY the deposit to register and secure a seat in class. Students will then have from the day they pay the deposit up until halfway through their class to pay their remaining balance. We also allow and encourage registration up to 3 months in advance. This allows students ample time to make payments in order to be paid in full by the time their class starts, if they wish.
We offer our students the freedom to decide when they would like to make payments and how much they would like to pay, as long as the remaining balance is paid off by the halfway point of the class. Payments can be made conveniently online with any major credit card at any time through the Student Portal, or over the phone with Student Services.
If you are unable to make full payment by these deadlines, please call Student Services at 701-404-9434 to discuss available options for extension. Extensions will not be permitted past the last day of class.

We accept all major debit/credit cards. All payments are done online through the website or over the phone with a Student Representative. We DO NOT accept cash or checks unless a 3rd party payer is paying for your tuition. Students must achieve a passing score of 71% or higher on the National Healthcare Certification Organization’s (NHCO) exam.

Students have three attempts to pass the exam. The NHCO’s exam retake policy must be followed.

Yes. Exam candidates can complete their certification exam on their computer in a location they choose. The two-hour exam is monitored by a virtual proctor, and audio and video of the examination experience are captured.

Externships are not a requirement in the state of Florida. Phlebotomy Training Specialists has created a clinical setting in the classroom, allowing students to complete all practice and hands-on training during class.

We do not offer job placement. However, you will receive exceptional training to help you get a job. During the course, your instructor will give advice on how to find and interview for potential phlebotomy jobs. Talk to your instructor about being listed as a reference for your resume! Instructors can even write students letters of recommendation to help students find work.
